Suffield Academy

185 North Main Street, Suffield, Connecticut 06078 | Grades 9-12, Co-ed | Founded in 1833

Description

Suffield combines challenging academics and high standards with an encouraging, supportive faculty. This unwavering mission rests at the heart of why our school is thriving. Students come to this small New England town from all parts of the world, dedicating themselves to their studies and self-discovery. Each year brings new surprises as students discover unknown talents—sometimes it is the sports star who unearths an affinity for acting or technology whiz who is surprised to find a passion at the potter’s wheel.

Academic offerings at Suffield Academy derive from our faith in the liberal arts as a foundation for learning and our programming balances a strong core curriculum with unique elective courses. We provide an environment where students find support from both teachers and peers, where they learn in and out of the classroom, on and off campus. The typical course load for most students each term is five full-credit courses. After consulting with their college counselor and the academic dean, seniors may choose to enroll in just four full-credit courses, but those courses should be in the core academic disciplines. Every course (except Leadership) meets twice a week for 45 minutes and twice a week for 70 minutes. The average class size is 11.

Student Activities
Signature Programs

The Leadership Program: core elements of the program include life skills, moral foundation, goal-setting, communication skills, successful problem-solving, self-awareness, and inspiring others.

The Chapel Program: focused on students and faculty gathering for a school meeting every Monday where guest speakers would present to the community.

SOLO (Suffield Outdoor Leadership Opportunities): an afternoon outdoor program where students enjoy hiking, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, snowshoeing, camping, and other seasonal activities.

The Balance Barn:  Research has shown that activities such as yoga and mindfulness meditation can vastly improve the lives of adolescents by helping them to develop self-awareness and confidence and that is what this barn is for. They offer improved cardiovascular fitness and overall health, better posture, reduced stress, increased strength and flexibility, and more joy and harmony in living.

Community Charity: students annually select a charity to support with a series of campus-wide fundraisers. Students nominate several organizations and a school-wide vote determines the recipient. The fundraising activities provide annual highlights for the community and provide Suffield students a platform to give back as leaders.
